Light travels down the fibre optic cable by bouncing repeatedly off the wall of the pipe. Now you might expect a beam of light, travelling in a clear glass pipe to simply leak out the edges, but fibre uses a phenomenon called total internal reflection. During this process the light in the cable hits the glass wall at a shallow angle (less than 42 degrees) and it reflects in again, as though the glass were a mirror. This is what keeps the light inside the pipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other thing that keeps light in the pipe is the structure of the cable itself.
